Mental Health and Functional Medicine

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

One of the most challenging aspects of experiencing a mental health problem can be the overwhelming sense of feeling lost. You may find yourself unsure about what to do next, where to turn for help, or why you are feeling the way you do. That uncertainty can leave you feeling stuck, frustrated and exhausted.

For some people, conventional approaches to conditions such as depression and anxiety can be helpful and provide significant relief. For others, however, symptoms may persist despite treatment, or may return when treatment is stopped.

This is where Functional Medicine can offer a different perspective.

Rather than looking at mental health symptoms in isolation, Functional Medicine aims to understand the many factors that may be contributing to an individual’s health and wellbeing. The approach recognises that two people can experience very similar symptoms while having very different underlying contributing factors.

Looking at the Bigger Picture

Mental health is influenced by a complex combination of biological, psychological, social and environmental factors. These can include chronic stress, poor sleep, diet, blood sugar regulation, physical activity, metabolic health, gut health, genetics, environmental exposures and previous life experiences.

This means that there is rarely a single explanation that applies to everyone.

For example, one person’s mood symptoms may be influenced by nutritional deficiencies or poor sleep, while another person’s symptoms may be closely associated with chronic stress, metabolic health or other physical and psychological factors. Although the symptoms may appear similar, the most appropriate approach may be very different for each individual.

This is why a one-size-fits-all approach may not be appropriate for everyone.

Functional Medicine aims to identify the different factors that may be contributing to an individual’s symptoms and then use this information to develop a personalised approach to care.

The Connection Between Mind and Body

Functional Medicine is based on the principle that the body works as an interconnected system. Mental and physical health are not completely separate, and changes in one can influence the other.

Sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, relationships and physical health can all influence how we feel emotionally and mentally. Likewise, prolonged stress, anxiety and low mood can affect sleep, appetite, energy levels, digestion and other aspects of physical health.

Taking this broader view allows practitioners to consider the whole person rather than focusing on a single symptom.

A Functional Medicine assessment may involve a detailed discussion of your medical and health history, lifestyle, diet, sleep, stress levels and other factors that may be relevant to your wellbeing. Where appropriate, physical examination and laboratory testing may also be used to provide additional information.

Genetic and environmental factors may also be considered, alongside psychological, social and lifestyle influences.

Creating a Personalised Approach

Because no two people are exactly alike, treatment should be tailored to the individual.

Functional Medicine may incorporate a range of strategies alongside appropriate conventional medical care. Depending on the individual’s needs, these may include nutritional support, dietary changes, lifestyle interventions, stress-management techniques, exercise, sleep optimisation and psychological support.

Where appropriate, nutritional supplementation or other targeted interventions may also form part of the overall plan.

The goal isn’t simply to manage a symptom in isolation. Instead, the aim is to understand the wider picture, address the factors that may be contributing to poor health, and support the individual’s overall wellbeing.

This doesn’t mean that conventional treatments have no place. Medication and other established treatments can be valuable and, for some people, essential. A Functional Medicine approach can work alongside conventional care, rather than necessarily replacing it.

A More Complete Approach to Mental Health
